November 12 – 18, 2006
Open letter from Dr. Jim Scales, Superintendent of Hamilton County Schools, to the
community:
American Education week is November 12-18, 2006 this year, celebrating “Great Public
Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility.”
This thought-provoking theme is designed to highlight the importance and contributions
of our school staffs, parents and students toward creating great public schools.
Public education is the last great bastion of our democracy. We are responsible for
creating the future leaders of our community and this country. What a right and what a
responsibility! We at Hamilton County Schools take this responsibility seriously and
strive to provide the best quality education for all of our students each day.
While public education is a right afforded all children under law, it is not one to be taken
lightly or taken for granted. I encourage parents and community members to become
involved in the tapestry of the education of our youth. Get involved in your community
school. Volunteer your time and skills. Help shape the future of Hamilton County. I can
assure you that your involvement will generate a great sense of personal
accomplishment and satisfaction as well as make a significant impact on the next
generation of Hamilton County leaders.
As we prepare our students to compete in the Global Economy, we as a community
must come together and realize that we share the responsibility for developing the future
citizens of our country. We need to work together to produce a quality group of
youngsters who have choices, opportunities and skills to succeed.
By developing strong partnerships between parents, students, staff, community
members, elected officials, business leaders and philanthropic organizations, we give
our children a well-rounded and relevant approach to their education and infuse them
with the tools they need to succeed in the 21st Century.
I thank each and every member of the Hamilton County Schools’ team, from our
outstanding teachers and principals to our steadfast support staff, parents and loyal
volunteers, for their tireless dedication to our students. Your commitment to the more
than 40,000 students in public schools in Hamilton County is paying off as our
achievement continues to climb and our students make progress toward successful
completion of their education.
Thank you for your investment in our future and your continued support of Hamilton
County Schools.
Together we continue to make a difference.

Jim Scales, Ph.D.
