The 6th grade paperless classroom just got a little closer to getting their desperately needed new computers thanks to a generous grant from McKee Baking.
"McKee has always been a huge suporter of education and no stranger to the Ooltewah-Collegedale community and they have definitely brought us closer to realizing the dream." Says the teacher Mr. Whitecotton. A 15-year veteran technology teacher, Mr. Whitecotton has seen technology education come a long way. He began teaching the new paperless classroom pilot this year in the 6th grade. It is a bold initiative to extend the learning opporunity to the students at OMS and reach beyond the traditional ways of learning to a bold new approach. . He explains that his "students are doing Social Studies and Sciene in a virtual classroom online without any textbooks, paper, or pen and they are loving it." But they are using computers that are 8 years old. This makes it challenging he says, "when one computer freezes up, we just move to another one." They are hoping with the help of other sponsors to begin purchasing computers very soon.
Thanks again McKee Baking for all you do to help OMS!

OMS Teacher Spotlight
OMS Teacher Spotlight
Mrs. Hall

By OMS Website Staff Writer: Cade Starling
Mrs. Cheryl Hall is a legend at OMS. She began her teaching career at Ooltewah in 1982. She has seen a lot over the years and has been an intrical part of the tremendous success in our Math Department. As a young girl and with inspiration from her 6th grade math teacher, Pat Head, Mrs. Hall decided to be a math teacher. She continues to teach Mathematics at Ooltewah Middle School for 30 years now. Falling in love with math, she would prefer no other subject to teach. The best thing about teaching in her eyes is when the “light bulb goes off”, and the students get it! Mrs. Hall says she plans to continue teaching at our school until she cannot teach any longer. Mrs. Hall is an amazing teacher and the OMS website solutes her.

Students Take the ACT Explore Test
By 6th Grade Student: Macy Wheeler

The Explore is a test taken by the 8th graders to predict how a student will do on the ACT. The Explore test also asks questions about college and what kind of  job the student wants to have when they grow up. So, this test has a great impact on a student’s future, and therefore it is important for them to do well. Jacob Mathews a Crusader student at OMS confirmed that by saying “ the test is the beginning of the student’s future” and Bailey Hannah said “it will  help you get a good job, good college, and make your parents proud.”
At OMS teachers have a unique way of motivating the 8th graders; the school hosts a pep rally. Mr. Eller told the press that the pep rally “ increases awareness of the importance as well as shows support for out students taking it. This is the ‘ Big Game’ for the 8th graders.”
Mr. Eller also stated that “ if our students do well our school gets the confirmation that our teachers are teaching lessons that compare to the national levels. Students get their academic ability levels verified and the school gets validation regarding teaching.” That is a really big deal! The results of the test will be in sometime in February, so students will have to wait until they come back to find out how they did and what their futures might hold

Boy's Basketball Team Wins 3rd Place in the 2011 HCAC Tournament
Congratulations to the Boys Basketball Team that won two out of three this weekend and took third place in the HCAC Tournament.  Their only loss came Friday night after they fell behind by sixteen in the first half but fought all the way back to take it into overtime.  They then rebounded on Saturday morning by winning against East Hamilton by one point to take third place.  Also, congratulations to Coach Williams and Coach Dvorak for a great season and a lot of exciting wins.

1st place Owls Soccer Team Takes First Place!
Congratulations to the OMS Boys soccer team who defeated Signal Mountain Sat afternoon in OT (penalty kicks) and then East Hamilton Sat evening ,again in penalty kicks, to become #1 HCAC AA soccer champions!!! After dominating most of the final game, they fell behind 1-0 in overtime but overcame adversity and fought back to tie the game in OT and send it to penalty kicks beating East Hamilton for the number one spot!

thank you

The Fire and Police Departments Forgotten Child Fund would like to thank the volunteers that helped with the Christmas Toy Drive. Your generous support will help them continue to provide Christmas each year for many children. This past year they provided toys for 6198 children! We hope to provide for a greater number of children in the years ahead, and if at any time, you know of a family that is in need of toys for their children, please contact the Forgotten Child Fund. The contribution that you gave will go a long way to help them accomplish their goal.
