Accelerated Reader
What is Accelrated
Reader (AR)?
Accelerated Reader is a computer program designed to motivate students
to read independently both in and outside of school. After a student reads an AR
book, he/she goes to the computer to answer questions about the content of the book.
If the student passes this multiple-choice test, he/she earns points according to
the number of questions answered correctly. The test serves as verification that the
child has read the entire book and achieved basic comprehension of the material. The
computer program keeps a record of the tests taken, the percentage of questions answered
correctly, and an accumulation of each student's points.
What are Accelerated
Reader (AR) books?
These are
books for which our school has computer tests. Children choose AR tests by
appropriate reading levels and personal interest. For example, a fifth grade student
would not get credit for passing a test on a first grade book. AR books can be found
in libraries and bookstores, and may even include books you have in your home. We
have placed a McBrien AR list in the East Ridge and Eastgate libraries and in several
area bookstores, including McKay's Used Books, Barnes and Noble and Books A Million.
The lists not only identify the titles of the AR books, but also the reading level
of each book. Our school library has AR books identified by colored stickers
according to reading level so students can easily find appropriate books.
How do students qualify
for Accelerated Reader recognition and incentives?
Each grade level has decided on a number of points or books read
that must be earned during a nine-week period to qualify for recognition. At the end
of each quarter, student records are reviewed by the teacher to determine which students
have met the grade level goal. Those students who qualify are recognized in an AR
assembly and are given a special privilege for that day such as dressing as a book
character. Students who meet the year-long goal for the grade will get to
participate in the MoonWalk in May. If a student does not meet the quarter goal he
may still obtain the end of year goal, since the points accumulate over the entire school
year.
How can parents be
involved in Accelerated Reader?
Encourage your children to read outside of school hours. Make
regular trips to the library. The single most important thing a parent can
do with small children is to read to them and with them, beginning at a very early age.
Don't wait until your toddler starts school to begin the habit of reading to your
child! This develops essential reading readiness skills.
