History
McBrien Elementary School has undergone many changes since it was constructed in 1954. The school was used as a junior high school from 1954-1958. Several principals have served the school over the past forty-three years. These include Fred Jackson, J.R. Rodman, James Monroe, Mack Franklin, Jack Pratt, James Booth, Donald Beard, Rodney Thompson, Mary Anderson, Susan Kennedy, and most recently Madeline Bell. Until 1987, the school went through grade six. In the 1987-88 term, the sixth grade was removed and these students were sent to East Ridge Junior High School. During the next several years the student enrollment grew. McBrien added two portables which house a kindergarten class and a pre-Kindergarten class, another portable building which currently houses a 1st grade class and the PTA Workroom, another portable which houses Special Education and ESOL teachers, and two more portables which house the computer lab and the music class.
The grounds have been landscaped extensively and the playground has been remodeled. The Pioneer Frontier is a focal point for the entire East Ridge community.
The interior of the school building has been remodeled with new drop ceilings and tile floors added throughout the building. The entire building is air-conditioned and all lockers have been refurbished and repainted.
McBrien has noticed a significant
increase in foreign students, especially from Eastern Europe. We have an ESOL
(English as a Second Language) teacher based at McBrien to serve these students.
In 1996 the East Ridge
Education Committee (EREC) was formed to serve the five East Ridge Schools. Its
mission is educational commitment. Education is the key to helping our young people
succeed which will in turn make the community strong, respected, safe, and prosperous.
