The
2007 Eighth Grade Trip was not only educational but also very
interesting for the 94 students and 8 faculty members in
attendance. Hunter Chaperones were especially proud of our
students as they received compliments regarding behavior and
manners all across the east coast on route to Washington DC.
After 13 hours of travel, we arrived in our nations capital and
"deployed our troops" to their rooms for needed sleep.
The second day of the trip started with a vigorous 24 degrees
and snow. Monuments, landmarks, and sites were abundant during
the day and highlighted by a visit to the White House, the
Washington Cathedral, and a tour of the Capitol by our own
Congressman Zach Wamp. Upon arriving back to the hotel, a
snowball fight ensued and the principal was targeted by many.
No secret service, security force, or other faculty members were
present to aid the principal in the winter wonderland war. The
evening ended with fellowship and an optional Bible study before
"lights out."
Awakening to a beautiful sunny morning, the Hunter troops
visited the historic Iwo Jima Memorial, the Korean Memorial, and
the Viet Nam Memorial. We also were amazed at the Lincoln
Memorial and spent time at the reflection pool before heading
over to the National Archives and the historic documents housed
there. Rejuvenated by our lunch in the Old Post Office, we
spent the afternoon visiting the different museums of the
Smithsonian Institute. Some adventurous walkers made their way
to the Metropolitan Art Gallery. Dinner allowed students and
chaperones some need time and space as we ate in the five story
Pentagon City Mall. After eating and shopping, an exhausted
group returned to rooms, ending an eventful and tiring day.
On our final day, we packed up and headed to the Holocaust
Museum, which for many put life a little bit better in
perspective, to say the least. For some it made us more
appreciative of the blessings we have been given, the families
we are apart of, and the possibilities our futures have before
us in the land of the free and the home of the brave. From
there we headed back to the front of the White House for group
pictures, watched a protest, and did some street vendor
shopping. After a lunch we headed back to good ole
Chattanooga/Ooltewah and be it ever so humble there is no place
like home. Even when you arrive back at 2:15 in the morning.
Thanks go out to Staci Brown, Suzy Hall, Karen Parker, Phillip
Nau, Levon Simpson, and Doug Womack for chaperoning this
wonderful trip. A special thanks goes out to Denise "Fitz"
Fitzsimmons for all the time and effort put into the trip to
make it most memorable for all.
Sincerely,
Your blessed Principal
Gary Kuehn
