Dear 6th grade students and parents:

We have had a wonderful start to a busy and exciting school year!  The students are learning their schedules, getting to know their teachers, and making new friends.  As you know, your child’s academic course load will continue to include English, reading, math, science, and social studies.  However, our sixth graders now have a new opportunity in related arts.  The students will be part of an exploratory related arts program which will enable them to try most of the related arts classes we offer at Hunter.  We feel this new exploratory curriculum will enrich and enhance our regular academic courses and enable the sixth graders to investigate the various worlds of performing arts, visual arts, and technology.

The addition of a full-time Spanish teacher has allowed us to offer Spanish to the sixth graders for the first time at Hunter.  The majority of our sixth graders will take Spanish for one nine-week grading period and will rotate through other related arts classes each nine-week quarter.  (There are a few exceptions to this rotation, such as band, which is a full-year course.)  As a part of the move toward compliance with the Tennessee Obesity Act, most sixth graders will take physical education at least two quarters as a part of their rotation.

This exploratory program in related arts may have caused some confusion for your student, and for this, we apologize.  However, we believe that it will be a good opportunity as it will provide interest-based courses, short in length, so students will get to experience a wider variety of learning environments.  The students have already begun their rotations, and they will receive a copy of their new schedule by Monday.  I hope that your child is excited about being at Hunter as we look forward to a great academic year!

Sincerely,

Gary W. Kuehn
