Important Instructions Regarding Backpacks. Please Read!!!

Dear Parents and Students,

The new school year is off to a great start!  However, we have a couple of items that I would like to update you on.  As you may already know, the opening of our new building was supposed to have taken place by the beginning of the school year.  However, construction issues caused a delay, thereby presenting a problem with the assignment of lockers to our students.

As you know, combination locks are attached to each locker.  During the summer, one of our staff works 75 to 100 hours to change the combination on every locker.  If we had assigned lockers to all 850+ students in the “old” part of the building, once we move to the new addition in a few weeks, we would have had to issue lockers again after the move so students would have a locker close to their homeroom.  Since school has started, we no longer have the staff to once again spend close to 60 hours to re-key the combination on 400 to 600 lockers.  Needless to say, the option of 25 to 30 backpacks in a classroom floor was not viable either due to safety concerns.  Therefore, we are asking students and parents to be flexible over the next few weeks until our new addition is completed.  While we realize that the rule of carrying no backpack is an inconvenience at this time, we are simply trying to protect the safety of our students and ask that you, as a parent, help us enforce this practice by asking your child to leave his/her backpack at home for the time being.

Students may wish to carry trapper keepers with folders and paper.  This way, they will have a secure method of keeping up with their work, and they can transfer necessary papers to their binders when they get home.  Teachers understand that this is an inconvenience to our students and have agreed to hold off on issuing books at this time.  Thank you for helping your child understand that this is a temporary situation.  The safety of our students at Hunter Middle is paramount!

We have also sent home a letter to our sixth grade parents explaining the new exploratory related arts program (in sixth grade only).  For the first time, we have a full-time Spanish teacher and are offering Spanish along with our other related arts classes on a nine-week rotating basis.  This new exploratory program also helps us move toward compliance with the Tennessee Obesity Act by offering physical education for two grading periods to the majority of our sixth graders.

I regret any inconvenience or misunderstanding these changes have brought to you or your child.  Please know that, as always, the safety and welfare of your child is the most important factor to our Hunter staff.  We are excited about the positive start our teachers have made in the classroom and look forward to a great year and a smooth move into our new building – eventually!!  Thanks for your understanding.

State Report Card for Hunter Middle School

There are several things that parents and students should be aware of as we near the end of this school year. Please keep the following in mind:
• Registration for our current 6th and 7th graders will be in May. Parents of students who will be 8th graders next year need to realize that several of their classes will be for high school credit. The grades earned in those classes (Algebra I, Spanish I, physical science, and Career Management for Success) will count toward high school GPA and class rank, and they will be noted on the high school transcript. Please make sure that the registration sheets are completed and returned to school.
• If you know that your child is not returning to Hunter next year, please notify us as soon as possible. If you have an 8th grader who will not attend his/her zoned high school next year, please notify the guidance office by June 5th.
• End of Course (EOC) exams for Spanish I will be May 2nd and physical science will be May 3rd. The exam will count 20% toward the final course average. In order to earn Carnegie credit, the final average must be at least 70.
• The Algebra I Gateway Exam will be May 1st. The exam will count 20% toward the final average. Passing this exam is a graduation requirement.
• Orientation for students in our attendance zone who will be 6th graders next year is on Monday, May 7th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Hunter gym.
• The Academic Letter program will be Wednesday, May 9th. In order to earn an academic letter, each individual grade in all academic classes must be at least 85 for three consecutive nine weeks with no N’s or U’s in conduct nor any suspensions. (This is in contrast to Beta Club where the overall average is considered.)
