Mr. Ephraim Hixson Sr. and his wife Margaret gave to the country in 1883 a small tract of land to construct a school building. By 1889 a two-story building had been erected by the community. After the turn of the century the student body had outgrown the building and in 1906 plans were made to build a school on a twenty-acre plot donated by Mr. and Mrs. P.A. Rogers. By 1909 Hixson had its first graduation class of three girls. (The three became career teachers with a combined record of over one hundred years in education.)

Since 1911 the school has had sixteen principals including the present principal, Mrs. Christine Couch. With the growth of the Hixson community the school population grew, therefore a number of expansions did occur in the last century. The last major construction was a new school begun in 1966. Several other expansions have occurred then, one being the building of the football stadium which was complete in 1977. In 1993 the ninth grade was added to the student body and a new wing was added to accommodate the additional students.

Hixson High School has been recognized for promoting excellence in education by the U.S. Department of Education, the Carnegie Foundation and was a member of Coalition of Essential Schools. A major change occurred in the building when in 2006-07 the school became wall-to-wall academies. PRIDE Academy (9th grade,) MASH Academy (math, science, health, family, and consumer sciences,) WILD Academy (humanities, fine arts, and leadership.)

Looking to the past Hixson High has accomplished much, looking at the present many changes are taking place, and looking toward the future we anticipate many years of challenges and service.
