History
of the Teaching Excellence Award |
|||||
In 1994, a school board member by the name of Bill Nevins created a program that would honor teachers for excellence in and out of the classroom. Mr. Nevins sold the Board of Education on the idea of choosing one teacher per quarter to honor for exceptional performance. The Fund for Excellence was asked to help launch the program with financial support. Teachers are nominated to the principal by their peers. The principal then nominates the teacher by completing a form and sending it to the school board secretary. All nomination forms are modified to make the teacher anonymous, creating no bias in the selection process. Winners are recognized at quarterly school board meetings by being awarded framed photographs of themselves; one for the school, one for the teacher, and one to hang at the Central Office in the Hall of Fame. The Fund for Excellence presents each teacher with a check for $1,000 to use as they wish. TEACHING EXCELLENCE AWARD RECIPIENTS |
