We welcome you and your child to first grade, one of the most fundamental years in your child's education. Please do your best to remain actively involved this year and in the future. Together, we can help build a firm foundation.
Reading is one of the most important pieces of our curriculum. You can help by reading with your child each night. Research shows that stronger readers develop when they are read to often and practice daily. We will soon begin a nightly reading log to support our Accelerated Reader program. Accelerated Reader is a program that is utilized at school and supported at home. A list of A.R. books can be purchased for $3.00. This will help you and your child choose books on their reading level. They can take tests on these at school the next day. If you have any questions, please let your child's teacher know.
Math is also a huge part of daily routines in 1st grade. Please create ways to bring concepts into daily practice. Spend time counting by 1's, 2's, 5's and 10's. Practice the concepts of money and time. Addition and subtraction is important as well. Look for math opportunities in the world around you.
Please keep up with daily information by checking the homework folder every night. Review work, correct, and discuss. Don't forget, homework stays the same every week unless notified otherwise. Please help us build a pattern for the future by making homework and reading a daily routine.
